Operation Sindoor: Indian Army Repels Pakistani Drone and Munition Attacks

On the night of May 8-9, 2025, the Indian Army successfully repulsed a series of coordinated drone and munition attacks launched by the Pakistan Armed Forces along the western border, including the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The Army confirmed that it gave a "befitting reply" to these provocations, which included both aerial aggression and numerous ceasefire violations (CFVs).

Key Developments:

  • Scale of Attack: Pakistan launched multiple drone strikes-over 50 swarm drones were intercepted and shot down by Indian forces-as well as other munitions across the entire western frontier. The attacks targeted key military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, Udhampur, and several other locations. Pakistani troops also resorted to heavy shelling and CFVs along the LoC.

  • Indian Response: The Indian Army deployed advanced air defence systems, including L-70 guns, Zu-23mm and Schilka systems, and specialized counter-UAS equipment. These measures, alongside the S-400 Sudarshan Chakra missile defence system, neutralized the incoming drones and missiles, preventing any significant damage to Indian assets.

  • Counterstrikes: In retaliation, Indian forces carried out precision strikes across the LoC. Kamikaze drones were used to destroy a Pakistani air defence system near Lahore, and airstrikes targeted several Pakistani posts. The Indian response matched the intensity of the Pakistani attacks, focusing on neutralizing military assets and infrastructure.

  • Civil Defence Measures: Blackouts were enforced across multiple states, including Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, as a precaution against further aerial threats. Security drills were conducted in hundreds of districts to ensure civilian safety.

  • Casualties and Damage: Indian authorities reported no casualties or material losses on the Indian side due to the effective interception of threats. However, Pakistani firing resulted in civilian casualties in border areas, with at least sixteen lives lost, including women and children.
